Over time, businesses evolve and change. Over the past few months I’ve seen an increase in clients inquiring about options if they no longer wish to maintain a complete website for a particular domain. While the exact answer is different for everyone, the general answer is — domain forwarding.
What are the benefits to this approach? It provides you both consistency and flexibility. Your customers/clients already know to find you at this-is-my-domain.com. Now you’ll only need to budget for the domain registration each year.
It’s your choice if you want your domain to automatically redirect visitors to the social media site du jour, a landing page on a webpage you still update, or even to a newsletter signup and archive page. Bonus, all those business cards you bought will still be good!
How do you do this? The best way is to make sure your domain isn’t registered and bundled with your website host. Contact them to see if you can keep it there without a hosting account. Otherwise you’ll need to transfer it to a domain registrar.
Once that’s completed you need to look in the settings there for redirect or forwarding. It’s often as simple as pasting in the new URL you want the domain to go to.
That’s all there is to it.
